Psychiatry
Psychiatry is the branch of medicine that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders. Administered by a trained and licensed medical professional, psychiatry involves the use of medication management and ongoing assessment to ensure you are receiving the essential therapeutic benefits from your treatment.
A licensed psychiatric provider at our clinic will meet with you to determine whether medication is an appropriate tool to help you manage your individual symptoms. At Schwieters Medical, your psychiatric provider will offer you a comprehensive and customizable approach to listen to your concerns, evaluate your condition, and recommend a proper course of treatment (i.e., medication). Research continues to show that medication management is most effective with therapy. Your psychiatric provider may also recommend an experienced therapist to meet separately, in conjunction with your psychiatric treatment. Our providers at Schwieters Medical encourage a collaborative experience with all your medical providers to ensure you are receiving the most complete care.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy, sometimes called talk therapy, is a treatment that involves a talking relationship between a therapist and patient. It can be used to treat a broad variety of mental disorders and emotional difficulties. The goal of psychotherapy is to eliminate or control disabling or troubling symptoms so the patient can function better. Depending on the extent of the problem, treatment may take just a few sessions over a week or two or may take many sessions over a period of years. Psychotherapy can be done individually, as a couple, with a family, or in a group.
Genetic Testing
If you have been diagnosed with depression and have failed at least one medication, consider talking to one of our providers about genetic testing. Genetic testing is a pharmacogenomic test that analyzes clinically important genetic variations in your DNA. Pharmacogenomics is the study of how an individual’s unique genetic makeup my affect their outcomes with medications. This laboratory test examines certain genetic characteristics that you may have. The results of the test, along with other non-genetic factors and the clinical experience and knowledge of one of our providers, may help them select more appropriate medications for you.
Medical Cannabis
A provider at our clinic may be able to certify you for medical cannabis, should you meet the guidelines of the Minnesota Department of Health and our clinic policies with this process. Please call our office and one of our qualified staff members will be able to help answer any questions you may and to see if an appointment might be right for you.
